ALBERT VAN DEN BERG

A former international player & World Cup winner with over 50 test caps, Albert van den Berg has coached professional clubs in South Africa, Japan and the UK. He is currently the Forwards & Lineout Coach of Welsh URC club, The Scarlets.

NEIL DE BRUIN

Having joined the Golden Lions as head of their high-performance programme, Neil was promoted to Super Rugby Attack Coach, before a Japanese move to serve as Attack and Backline coach at both NTT Docomo Red Hurricanes and NTT Urayasu D-Rocks. After a successful stint as Director of Rugby at Paarl Boys High School, he joined the Bulls in 2026 as Attack Coach in the URC and Champions Cup. 

SCOTT MATHIE

A former Bulls, Sharks & Newcastle Scrumhalf, Scott Mathie began his coaching career as Director of Rugby at Durban High School (DHS), before leading Griquas as Currie Cup Head Coach. He embraced the untested waters of the USA, winning back-to-back MLR titles with the New England Free Jacks in 2023 & 2024. Currently working at Edinburgh in the URC, he will soon take up the role of Sharks Backline Coach

NORMAN LAKER

A quintessential Defence Coach, Norman Laker has won the U21 Currie Cup, senior Currie Cup and the URC. He began his coaching career at just 23 years old and became 1st XV Head Coach at Paul Roos Gymnasium whilst still only 25 years old. Norman is currently the Stormers URC Defence Coach.

JOEY MONGALO

Holding a master’s degree in industrial & organizational psychology, Joey Mongalo is one of the great thinkers of the game. Having worked as Head Coach in the Currie Cup, he’s also wracked up trophies as a Defence Coach; winning the Currie Cup, Challenge Cup, URC SA Conference and reached two Super Rugby finals. Joey is the currently the Sharks URC Defence Coach.  

PHIWE NOMLOMO

A teacher by qualification, Phiwe Nomlomo became the South African U18 Schools Head Coach, before joining the Sharks as U21 Currie Cup Head Coach. With a reputation as an expert in all matters related to skills & attack, he was promoted to the URC management team, before joining the Bulls. He is currently the Blue Bulls Currie Cup Head Coach.

JOSH STRAUSS

A Scottish international player with over 270 professional caps, Josh Strauss worked as a coaching consultant with Western Province, before joining renowned school, SACS, as Director of Rugby. Josh has also won the Varsity Cup with UCT as Forward Coach. He is currently the Blue Bulls Currie Cup Forwards Coach
